Shining a light on five great Kiwi organisations
What does doing good mean? At Earthwise, it’s about producing natural products that are safe for both our customers and the environment. It also means lending a hand wherever we can to others who do good. In this post we highlight
five Kiwi organisations that more than deserve our support.
Auckland City Mission
When putting food on the table is a struggle, Christmas can be an incredibly stressful time. Auckland City Mission plays an important role, particularly at this time of year. This Christmas they expect to distribute over 3,000 emergency food parcels to families and individuals in need as well as 10,000 gifts. If that’s not enough, about 2000 people are expected to arrive for Christmas lunch this year.
Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has been helping others since 1883. So, when they sent out an appeal for donations in the North Shore Times recently we were happy to help by supplying 250 litres of lavender laundry liquid. It’s simply amazing what the Sallies do. They help more than 120,000 families and individuals every year with budgeting advice, food and clothing assistance, emotional support and lots more besides.
The Nappy Lady
Do you know between 8–19% of domestic New Zealand waste is made up of disposable nappies? If every Kiwi parent used just one cloth nappy on their baby per day, they would slash the number of nappies consigned to landfill each week by one million? Ever since she struggled to find cloth nappies for her child eight years ago, Kate Meads, aka Nappy Lady, has championed sustainable alternatives to disposable nappies, which has included starting New Zealand Cloth Nappy Week.
Little Sprouts
While pregnant with her first son, Jo Alderdice realised just how stressful having a baby can be for some Kiwi families — particularly those relying on a single income. So, she started Little Sprouts. Through a network of charity partners and commercial sponsors, like Earthwise, Merino Kids and Baby Online, Little Sprouts helps out families with new babies by providing essentials like clothing, nappies, wipes, toys and smoke alarms. They have been going just three years, but Little Sprouts has already received a Health and Safety Award at the Wellington Airport Community Awards.
Bellyful
Like Jo Alderdice, the organisers and volunteers at Bellyful understand how tough parenthood can be. So Bellyful volunteers deliver meals to families of newborn babies that are struggling to cope. Earlier this year to celebrate reaching 10,000 Facebook likes, an Earthwise fan suggested that we donate 150 boxes of laundry powder to help them on their way.
